John Staneff

At the request of his wife, I organized and hosted a memorial service for my best friend on Sunday. His obituary below understates his 20 years of very active service to the Boy Scouts of America, at the troop level, in the outdoors, and at the district level.

On Mt. St. Helens a few years ago

John Evan Staneff, Jr., 60, of Kent, died at his home on Thursday, June 17. He is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, his sons, his brother, and his sister.

John earned a Masters Degree in Computer Science from Central Washington. During his 35-year career, he was a Vice President for a software company that helped to develop computer simulation programs to help train surgeons. Later, he managed the software development team at Morpho in Tacoma. And, most recently, John was a computer science instructor first at Pierce College in Tacoma and later at St. Martin’s College in Lacey as well, teaching the fundamentals of computer programming with an emphasis on solving engineering problems.

Besides being a devoted husband and father, he was an avid hiker and traveler. He loved the outdoors and was very active in the Boy Scouts of America – devoting his last 20 years as a Assistant Scoutmaster and trainer of adult leaders.

He will always be remembered by his family and friends for his kindness, great sense of humor, and quick wit.
