Just Asking

Why am I hearing advertisements for the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport? I doubt that they are losing business to Portland International Airport, a three-hour drive from Seattle. Is this a good use of our tax dollars?

Why am I hearing advertisements for the military commissary stores? Every person eligible to shop there already shops there. Is this a good use of our tax dollars?

Why are Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac allowed to make political contributions? They are quasi-government organizations. Are they using tax dollars to lobby for more tax dollars?

PRESS RELEASE
Both University of Washington and Washington State University football practices were delayed nearly two hours yesterday after a player reported finding an unknown white powdery substance on a practice field in our state. Practices were immediately suspended at both state schools while police and federal agents were called to investigate. After a complete analysis, FBI forensic experts determined that the white substance unknown to the players was the goal line. Practice was resumed today after special agents decided that both teams were unlikely to encounter the substance again.

Where Have All the Hurricanes Gone?

Every year after the Hurricane Katrina and all the excitement of the 2005 hurricane season, the hurricane forecasters have told us to expect active hurricane seasons. Some said global warming was increasing the chances of powerful hurricanes.

But what happened? 2006, 2007, and 2008 have all been mild to average seasons.

Global warming is a tough sell when the world is covered with record low temperatures, and the hurricane seasons are mild.

Choosing Sides

Life is a lot more interesting if you choose sides, whether its sports or politics.

But sometimes you can end up in a pretty deep funk.

Like, this morning.

To try to grapple with the meaning of this election, I had a chat with a liberal coworker this morning and got her perspective on the election. She has no expectations that Obama will turn the economy around in 4 years, and expects the annual deficit to approach a trillion dollars. She is happy to see the Iraq war winding down and does not expect Obama to get us involved in any new wars. She claims he was elected for his vision for America, and she thought that was a great speech he gave last night. And it is really important to her that Obama is trying change America for the better, trying to do the right thing, and trying to present a fresh face to a world grown weary of Bush. I told her that results mattered to me, but she confirmed that results did not matter to her.

She made me more depressed. :(
