Cell phones in schools
New York City schools have banned cell phones in the schools. Can't walk into the building with them. Parents are in an uproar. I think it would be much easier to jam them than to ban them.
When we get on airplanes, they ask us to shut off our cell phones. How many of you have accidentally left them on for the whole flight? Did they come ask you to turn it off? Do they have a radio detection device that can locate a cell phone that is turned on? Could we get such a device to put in the schools to detect kids who left their cell phones on?
Just asking.

In the hospital, I never turned my cell phone off. Luckily, none of my patients ever spontaneously combusted.
I think that technology has progressed so much that cell phone interference is not a big issue in most situations.
In school, I can't help but wonder who these kids are calling. Aren't their friends all in school too?
Yeah, but you can text your friends during class.
Texting? Aren't the students supposed to be learning? Couldn't they cheat on tests by texting?
Jamming is a method of intentionally causing cell phone interference to stop the use of cell phones. A transmitter broadcasts a signal at every cell phone frequency that saturates the cell phone radio so that it cannot receive the signal from the towers. Sorta like trying to talk with really loud music in the background.
I thought jamming was illegal?
According to this source, you are correct, jamming cell phones is illegal.

They suggest blocking that radio signals (with metal screens for example) is not. But perhaps the law could be changed for schools?
I really think they jam cell phones in hotels so that you are required to use their phones if you need to make a call.
Not a very nice thing to do :P
What are you doing up so late, Miss Texas?
I am surprised how good cell phone reception is inside of large buildings. So I am not sure it is jamming so much as concrete and steel.
